Dominic Lieven is Professor of Russian Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Fellow of the British Academy. He is the elder brother of Anatol Lieven, and a brother of Elena Lieven. Dominic Lieven graduated first in the class of 1973 in history from Cambridge University and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard in 1973/4. Lieven is seen as a world-authority on Russian history and post-Soviet politics; and on empire and European history. Notably in the areas of comparative imperial history; problems of political stability on the European periphery 1860-1939, and Russia's confrontation with Napoleon 1807-14. His previous books include Empire: The Russian Empire and Its Rivals and Nicholas II: Twilight of the Empire. Three of his direct ancestors were generals in the Battle of Leipzig.
